String of Pearls

String of Pearls is a succulent plant with small, round, pea-like leaves that hang down on long stems. Native to South Africa and western parts of Southern Africa, the plant has many other common names, such as beads plant, beaded string or Peperomia or Rooperia in some regions.

The main stem of the Plant can trail up to 1 meter in length and cascade over the edges of a container, or be suspended from a hanging basket. String of Pearls have thick and fleshy leaves in a pearl shape that stores water. They are silver to green in color, with new growth sometimes tinged with red.

Growing them in bright, indirect light and in well-drained soil will produce the best results, and may even produce small, white, cinnamon-scented flowers in summer.

The plants will need regular watering during the growing season (spring and summer), but should be kept on the dry side during winter.

Make sure you use a well-drained soil, as the plants are sensitive to over-watering and root rot. If you do overwater, allow the soil to dry out before watering again.
